Defending Cross Country Champions
10/20/2009
The next state champions will be determined this Saturday at the Cross Country meet.

In Class-A ,Bismarck is the defending champion in both boys and girls.

The Demons are ranked number one and they`re the favorite.

"We`re going down there to win a state championship," says Dave Zittleman, the BHS boys head coach. "There`s no doubt about it and there is no guarantees in an sport and that`s been our focus making sure the kids are ready for what`s to come and we went to some big meets this year to prepare them and out team is ready to go."

And that is not a good sign for the rest of the state.

The Demons have four of the top nine ranked individuals.

"This team is by far the deepest team we`ve ever had," says Zittleman. "We go back to 13 guys who would be running on anybody state team and we`re just super deep this year. Last year, we has Joash and Devin up front. We do have two very good front runners again but our overall depth this year is the best we`ve ever had in the program."

The Bismarck boys ran meets in three different state during the regular season.

The story is similar for the Bismarck High girls.

The Demons are the number one ranked Class-A team in the state and they`re also the defending champion.

"We are undefeated in the state of North Dakota and we`re looking forward to Saturday and we believe that this is the goal that we`re looking at," says Scott Reichenberger, head coach.

During the state meet, teams are allowed to have 10-runners compete and when you`re a team built on depth, like BHS, it`s a big advantage..

"We believe that this year our ten girls are equally as good or maybe better than last year and so there`s a good possibility that you could have a shake-up in the top-five or even your sixth, seventh or eighth runners can make the difference in the outcome because they can be pushers and push back some other teams scores," says Reichenberger.

As good example of that was last year when Bismarck`s 10-runner finished in 36th-place.

State Cross Country is in Valley City.
