Lucky Ducks Now Open | 10/16/2012
After just a few days of being open, a new downtown deli is already gaining fans. According to general manager Eric Watson, the owners of Lucky Duck`s saw a need for a deli-style restaurant that features homemade daily specials and natural ingredients.
"No preservatives, no added nitrates or nitrites. This is something that`s as close to Mother Nature as you get."
Lucky Ducks took over the space on north 3rd street after the former Space Aliens BBQ Pit closed in August.
"Being localized in the downtown are with all of the surrounding businesses. Being close to the hospital and the capital building, we figure it was a great place to capitalize on the catering side of it," Watson said.
Owner Russ Kadlec says he wasted no time after closing on the place in late August. From the wood paneled ceiling to the granite counters, the work was finished in under six weeks.
"We really wanted to change the image of the restaurant. Get away from the past, previous restaurant everybody knows it`s been. So we decided, we have to do the whole thing new. We have to go through the whole thing and make everything good," Watson said.
In addition to replacing the entire kitchen and giving the interior a fresh look, Watson says customers will notice the food is also fresh. Lucky Ducks serves breakfast, lunch and supper, in addition to freshly baked cookies, brownies and caramel rolls. Naturally, the menu features a variety of sandwiches appropriately named for ducks of all colors. And yes, duck meat is also on the menu.
"She found us this duck bacon that was just amazing. The texture of it reminds me of a Canadian bacon feel almost, but it`s got this really nice, rich duck flavor that`s just over the top. It really sets apart the sandwich," Watson said.
And with a bustling lunch crowd, the new deli is already making a splash downtown. Lucky Ducks is open weekdays from 8:00 to 8:00, and Saturdays from 11:00 to 8:00.
