BSC to Finish NECE | 5/29/2012
Bismarck State College`s largest and most expensive building is finally filling out.
"It`s almost four years ago now that we occupied it, but when we built the building, we knew we didn`t have the money to finish the fourth floor," said BSC Foundation Executive Director Gordon Binek.
That was the case until recently. Binek and others from the BSC Foundation helped secure more than three million dollars to pay for construction on the top floor.
"Thanks to the funding from the legislature, we`re finishing it now and it`s going to be a great addition to the campus and the community."
North Dakota`s energy industry is helping out the project in more than one way. These concrete block walls include flyash from North Dakota power plants.
"The energy companies certainly led the way and said "we believe in this and we want to make sure it happens," Binek said.
The college has continued to earn praise for its energy programs, which have become even more prominent in the past few years.
"We were in the right place at the right time with those. We`ve had a strong energy program for years, for over three decades, but now with the oil and gas development, it`s really made a difference."
A difference Binek says he expects will resonate with both students and energy leaders as they take in the view from the fourth floor.
The college expects to finish construction by the end of October. The fourth floor will feature a classroom, a kitchen and a large banquet area.
