Cracked Phone Woes

Anybody with a smartphone can tell you they`re not indestructible, the phones crack easily and they`re not cheap to replace. Fortunately, you can repair your phone and save your contacts without shelling out for a new one.

Looking over a pile of shattered screens he affectionately refers to as the graveyard, James Beck with Epic Technologies has seen his share of mishaps when it comes to cell phones.

"All different types of, `My boyfriend threw it, my girlfriend hit it.` Anything you could really think of has probably come in already with the amount I`ve done."

Beck started his own business repairing computers. Now he also specializes in smartphones, repairing broken screens and cracked casings. "It`s all glass on the back, all glass on the front, so it doesn`t take much of a fall for that to be broken and find its way to my shop."

Anyone who`s been through the ringer can tell you replacing an iPhone or an Android isn`t cheap. Depending your plan, you may pay hundreds for a replacement phone that was repaired somewhere else. Beck, however, can replace a shattered screen for around $100. He admits, it`s not an easy skill to master.

It took him plenty of practice, but Beck can now strip down just about any smartphone in about 20 minutes. "You can bring it to me, an hour later, you have a working phone with all of your data on it."

Beck says if you want to keep your phone from ending up in the graveyard, you can try a scratchproof cover or a protective case. But if you do suffer a bit of bad luck, a call to a specialist like Beck could save you a little change in your pocket.
