Bentz has been gracing the court for the varsity team since eighth grade, and in that time she`s been named to all-state in basketball twice and volleyball once.
"Ashley does a lot. she does everything. she`s our point guard. She can be our center, she can be our forward, ball handling, she`s a great ball handler, shoot the three, post up she just does so many things that its a real versatile player to have on your team and somebody you look to for leadership," said Grant County head coach Nicole Bentz.
Bentz is on pace for 2,000 points, a thousand rebounds and a thousand assists. She`s the second highest returning scorer in Class B and number one in assists. "I like to get everybody involved, I mean on a fast break if someone is on a fly on the other side I would rather pass it up to them than take it up myself. its just the way I`ve always been. I try to be unselfish get everybody involved and I feel if I`m that way then everybody will kind of follow my lead and we`ll play a more team oriented basketball game."
In a game filled with the highest and lowest of emotions, Bentz shows none, having the same expressions no matter what happens after the tip and before the final buzzer. "I guess you can call it the game face I mean I just don`t show emotion I just don`t want people to pick up on when I`m frustrated. When something is good its I don`t want to say its not a big deal but its just like we did something good now lets get back on defense and lets get on with the game."
"A lot of people say she has the same face no matter what`s going on and I think she does that real well. She plays that emotional part to a level where people don`t see her frustration. they don`t see her excitement. they just see her as she is," Nicole said.
"Off the court, she`s not as serious and she`s really fun to hang out with. She does smile all the time. She doesn`t have her face that she has on the court because when its game time she know its down to business," said senior Elesha Tatro.
The business of making it to state. Grant County has been region runner-up twice in a row but Bentz says the third time is the charm.
Bentz is very talented in the classroom as well as sporting a 4.0 GPA. She is nursing a sore shoulder right now and has had a sit out a few games. Bentz plans on playing basketball at the Division-II level next year.
