Lippert/Martell

It`s been a year of unparalleled success for the South Border football team.

The Mustangs will be making their first appearance in the 9-man quarterfinals on Saturday.

The offensive game plan at South Border is pretty simple.

"We run the ball. That`s what we do," says head coach Jason Klusmann. "Not much for finesse, nothing fancy. Straight ahead."

And the Mustangs have not one but two weapons when it comes to running the football. Tallon Lippert provides the speed. Ross Martell supplies the power.

"He`s our between the ends runner," says Klusmann. "He gets the tough inside yards. He punishes defenders when they come up to tackle him. Tallon Lippert`s a nice compliment to him. He`s more of a slasher, our big play guy."

Even though the two have become good friends, they aren`t afraid to get after each other if things aren`t going well on the field.

"We`ve been great friends ever since this co-op started and it`s really carried out on the field," says senior Ross Martell. "We can compliment each other, tell each other what`s wrong, get a little upset at each other. We`re really good friends. It`s good to have each other."

But this thunder and lightning combo only started playing together last season. That`s because Lippert didn`t play high school football until his junior year.

"I made a dumb decision the first two years to not go out," says senior Tallon Lippert. "I missed a lot that I kind of figured I`d never be able to do again."

And now Lippert and Martell are getting the chance to experience something their two towns aren`t used to seeing.

"It`s very exciting," says Lippert. "It`s something neither teams could do when we weren`t co-oped when we were just Ashley-Wishek. Neither team has made it this far."

But even though the Mustangs are in uncharted territory, they won`t be satisfied unless their season ends in the Dakota Bowl.

South Border is a win away from another program first...

The Mustangs can advance to the semifinals as they host Hankinson on Saturday afternoon in Ashley.
