27th Annual KFYR-TV Bowling Classic | Video

Lee Timmerman | 2/7/2013

The 27th annual KFYR-TV Budweiser Bowling Classic is this weekend at Midway Lanes in Mandan. One of the 120 contestants will earn the championship and the $2,000 first place prize on Sunday.

Jim Mellon says the field will come from five different states and the demand for those 120 spots is high, in fact some guys who wanted in missed the deadline so they`re on the sideline.

"We got a waiting list but on Saturday they`ll bowl eight games all 120 of them and we`ll cut the field down to 30 for Sunday morning. We will pay 36 on the pay line but only 30 are going to be bowling Sunday morning head to head matches and from that field and after 10 games we`ll select our top five and they`ll go into the stepladder and that`s where it becomes a lot of fun."

That`s when you can watch live at noon on Sunday afternoon. Phil Mann of Hazen is the defending champion.

"He`s solid. Jack`s solid. You got Dave Schick, Duane Sandvick just threw a 300 game in the city tournament so all of those guys are capable of getting a 300 game out there pretty easy so we`re looking to see that," Mellon said.

That`s not to mention a whole crew of guys Mellon calls the young-guys who will be giving the veterans a challenge.

Last year, the five guys who made it on "TV" came from the "Veteran group."
