Don’t Buy It, Until We Try It: WinterTrax | Video

Amy Fox | 3/22/2013

Walking on the snow and ice can be dangerous if you`re not careful. But, before you go and buy a new pair of boots, there may be a product that can give you a little extra grip. In this week`s "Don`t Buy It, Until We Try It," I tried out WinterTrax.

You’re probably sick of this North Dakota winter weather. It seems like you`re always shoveling snow. And if you`re like me, you have to worry about all the ice. Well, WinterTrax may provide you with a little extra traction on the snow and ice.

But, will it really prevent you from falling? Well, "Don`t Buy It, Until We Try It."

For Mitch Thompson, working at Roosevelt Park Zoo during the winter means lots of slipping and sliding. "We usually wear some sort of snow boots and usually I start out with a decent amount of traction, but after a year or two, they start to wear down.”

Before Thompson headed out to work, he decided to put on some WinterTrax.

Thompson said, "I think it would help the wear on the bottom of the boots and help them last quite awhile longer. Just stretch over these bigger boots.”

With heavy duty boots, Thompson had a little trouble securing the WinterTrax in place. But, for me, it was a little easier.

"You just pull your toes back a little bit, but you don`t really notice too much that they`re on there,” said Thompson. “They are not heavy at all or anything.".

Finally, it was time to start working.

"So, what I’m going to be doing is dragging the bucket over to the gator and attempting to lift it up and dump in the gator," said Thompson.

The first around, Thompson had a little difficulty getting across the sheet of ice without the WinterTrax. But, when he put them on, he had a little more grip and traction on the ice.

"It really helped out when I was actually walking down the ice and everything."

WinterTrax fits on both men’s and women’s boots. But, I want to point out they are not for heavy duty use. But, if you`re accident prone, like me, this may provide you with a little more traction to eliminate another fall.

So, this week`s "Don`t Buy It, Until We Try It," earns a thumbs up.
