The City of Minot took a big step forward today in its efforts to protect city buildings from disasters, like the Mouse River Flood. The Magic City has received a two million dollar grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to complete Phase One of a project to protect the city`s Water Treatment plant.

This FEMA donation will be used for design work, permitting and environmental assessment, for a plan the city has to build a flood barrier around the water treatment facility. Because the plant is so important, city officials want to take action now.

“It was, if not the most important, one of the most important pieces of infrastructure we had in the city at that time. The value during the flood, was that there weren`t any people down there, but yet you had people on the hills that were still trying to get on with day to day life, so that piece of infrastructure for us is so important,” said Jason Sorenson, Minot Public Works Assistant Director.

Minot`s Public Works Department says Phase One of the project will take two to three years to complete.
