Perry Lee teaches video classes at Century High school. He likes his job a lot and has even made a few short films. After a year and half of shooting, and with some help from friends and family, he has just finished a full length film called Dakota Rangers. It is kind of a spaghetti western influenced by Clint Eastwood films, the Lonesome Dove series and, of course, John Wayne.
"So we`re kind of middle aged men playing cowboys, it got pretty elaborate. These guys thought, `Well why not at our age start investing in guns and costumes and the equipment?` It was kind of liberating and fun to do something than for no other reason than just having a good time," Lee said.
One of the few characters with theater and acting backgrounds in the movie is fellow Century teacher Rich Hovland. He makes a cameo appearance as the sheriff.
"He jumped at it. He`s a natural," Lee said.
"Kind of neat deal. I think everyone has something inside them that they want to be a character and act and whatever," Hovland said.
One of those people taking a shot at acting is Perry`s wife Sheryl. She graces the silver screen with her character Katherine Masterson.
She says it was a little different at first taking working with her husband, but he definitely has the skills to direct.
"I`ve always said that if Perry had been born either in New York or in California, that he would have been a director. I think he would have been the next Steven Spielberg. He just really has that in him," Sheryl said.
As for future films, Perry says the sky is the limit, and the ending to Dakota Rangers leaves room for a sequel.
The premiere for "Dakota Rangers" is Wednesday night at 7:00 inside the Century Auditorium. Admission is free and it is open to the public. All 14 cast members are from North Dakota.
