Oil Well Distance From Homes | Video

Jennifer Joas | 1/24/2013

Oil placement in Dunn County was not the only portion of the state where this is a concern. A farmer from McKenzie County testified in favor of a senate bill that would require oil wells stay farther away from homes. The bill would increase the setback from 500 feet to 750 feet.

But this landowner wants legislators to add another 500 feet to their proposed setback.

"Hopefully the people in the committee and the legislature, I hope they take a good hard look at this. And get with the oil industry and say hey, come on, let us have a little common sense here. Let us respect the people that are here too," said Frank Leppell, Landowner near Watford City.

Leppell says this will help with both traffic and the risk of accidents affecting homes in the area.
