Bluegrass Workshop | Video

Plenty of kids have dreams of growing up to be rock stars. After today, a few kids from Bismarck and Mandan may have plans to be folk musicians. Preston Schmidt, who plays in the bluegrass band Brand New Strings, hosted a workshop to give young musicians a few pointers. Schmidt grew up in Mandan. And his group was performing in Bismarck in the 8th annual Blizzard Bluegrass Weekend.

"That`s the biggest and probably most important thing for us to do, is show them that they can have a lot of fun playing music. It`s not just you have to play what`s on the page. You can be creative, you can do so much stuff with your music and kind of helps your feelings as a person and really open up not only music, but in life as well," he said.

"It`s really good to see that many people want to come out that want to know or want to learn more about it," said Randall Massengill of Brand New Strings.

Schmidt and the Brand New Strings performed this evening on the Bismarck State College campus.
