Snow Not Causing Major Problems for ND Farmers and Ranchers

| 12/31/2012

While there is more snow on the ground than last year, it hasn’t been causing any major problems for farmers and ranchers in the state. According to the USDA, while the amount of snow in December varied across the state, there were no major impacts reported on winter operations.

The USDA says cattle producers have been benefiting from areas of the state that received a limited amount of snow. However, there are only some parts of the state with enough snow protection for winter crops like alfalfa and winter wheat.

The average snow depth in North Dakota was 4.7 inches on December 30. Nearly one year ago, the average depth was 0.2 inches.
