Burleigh County to Increase Road Fees | Video

Joel Porter | 10/15/2012

The Burleigh County Highway Department is losing money maintaining township roads. The county was considering increasing fees by 20% to help cover the cost of servicing roads year round. A number of township representatives opposed the increase Monday evening, arguing the roads are poorly maintained. Commissioners instead voted to increase next year`s fees by 10%.

"I don`t really know that it`s a question of the cost so much as a service level expectancy for those dollars," Burleigh County Commissioner Brian Bitner said.

Commissioners say the cost of both gravel and road work is increasing ,and many townships that haven`t already maxed out their levies will likely have to raise taxes.
