Summertime Stomach Problems | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 7/13/2012

Summertime is a peak period for developing foodborne illnesses. Dieticians says that`s because when people have a picnic or go camping, they tend to leave their food out longer than they should. That`s when food temperatures reach the danger zone, causing bacteria to grow rapidly.

They say in warm weather, food should not be left out longer than two hours, and in cold weather, it shouldn`t be out past four hours.

"Even though you might have mild cases that there`s always that risk of having a severe case that can become very dangerous and it`s more likely to occur in elderly people or people who have comprised immune systems of young children," said St. Alexius dietician Kathy Stewart.

Stewart recommends taking a thermometer with you when you go camping to check the temperature of your food and your cooler.
