DUIs Increasing in ND | Video

Chris Williams | 5/23/2012

According to North Dakota crime statistics, the number of DUIs is increasing. One Williston resident says police need to step up when it comes to drinking and driving.

"A lot of families on the road, and I just think that they need to do more. If the staff isn`t large enough, they need to make it larger."

She says there is one easy way to make sure people are not drinking and driving.

"More police on the road, and when they are on the road they need to really, they can see what`s happening."

Sergeant Darcy Aberle of the North Dakota Highway Patrol says DUIs are becoming an area of concern.

"We`ve increased our awareness on DUIs, and we have been picking up more people. We had one weekend where we picked up 15 DUIs."

Aberle says drinking and driving is something that doesn`t have to happen.

"I`d say don`t do it. There`s taxi cabs, there`s friends, there`s always other means."

Aberle wants people to have fun, but remember to be careful this holiday weekend.

"This weekend, Memorial Day weekend, we hope people have a safe weekend and ya know we will be out in force."

The Highway Patrol will have officers working overtime this weekend to make sure the roads stay safe.
