Seat Belt Campaign | Video

Jenny Castro | 5/16/2012

As Memorial Day approaches, the national `Click It or Ticket` campaign is starting soon. To promote seat belt safety, the North Dakota Department of Transportation has been making the rounds across the state with a very realistic demonstration.

To hear or read about a fatal car accident is one thing, but to see what happens from the crash all the way to the morgue gives you an uneasy feeling and the North Dakota Department of Transportation is using this mock car crash scene investigation to communicate the importance of seat belt safety.

"From the beginning of a crash till the end, what happens when a person is not seat belted in," said Carol Thurn from the ND Department of Transportation.

In North Dakota, the majority of crashes are single vehicle crashes that rollover. And if you`re not wearing a seat belt, you go to the hospital with more than a few bruises.

"The doctors can`t fix everybody up so it was an important aspect we wanted to get across," Thurn said.

Most of the fatal accidents occur only 25 minutes from a person`s home and the majority of these crashes are going under 40 miles an hour.
