Ag Commissioner Holds Flood Meeting in Towner | Video

Jenny Castro | 5/7/2012

Downstream from Minot, smaller communities are dealing with issues related to flood-affected crop land and pastures that are filled with debris.

In Towner, North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring spoke at an open meeting to address the issues farmers and ranchers are facing as a result of damaged acres. It could be up to five years before the land recovers. Goehring says the meeting is important in assessing the economic impact so that some sort of program can address these problems.

"The fact that they have all this debris on their land that through no fault of their own has been deposited here and there doesn`t seem to be much of a plan in place to get it off."

Currently, limited state funds are available because of flood recovery and no state programs exist to address these issues.
