Prenton Hartleib, like so many others, wanted to make sure he had the best car insurance rate possible. Which is why he switched companies last week.
"The price of everything else is going up along with gas so it kind of helps out."
The National Association Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) say drivers in North Dakota are paying the second lowest rates in the nation. "The combined average premium is a little over 650 bucks, now that`s - you`re talking liability, collision and comprehensive," said Adam Hamm, N.D. Insurance Commissioner.
Quite a bit lower than a study that came out a few weeks ago. It claimed that North Dakota drivers are actually paying the 11th highest rates in the country.
Hamm added, "They were looking at only one type of driver, only one type of vehicle, a brand new vehicle and only one type of area of a given state."
The NAIC does a full review of drivers` rates, which is why it takes over a year and a half for a report to come out on any given year. The current report shows statistics from 2009. But for now, drivers are just glad to hear that our rates are staying among the lowest.
"I just bought a car last week and ya I was surprised at what the insurance was," said driver Gladys Bohrer.
Hamm said he believes the reports for 2011 and 2012 will be about the same. The state with the lowest rates is Iowa, paying around $631 a year. The highest rates in the country are in Louisiana where they are paying over $1,200.
