Legos are one of the most popular toys ever created. They are most popular among young boys, and this week, many of those Lego fans are attending Lego Camp and getting a chance to get creative with Legos.
If you give eight-year-old Conan Blair a pile of legos, there`s no telling what he will build. "I just love to make anything out of Legos. I just love taking a bunch of random Legos and just putting them into any sort of mish mash," he said.
On this day, he`s building tripods, robots that will live on a space station. It`s a project he and several other boys are working on at Lego Camp.
But that`s not all that`s happening here. This group is building the Empire State Building.
Nine-year-old Teddy Hardmeyer said, "It`s really cool because it`s going to be really big, maybe a foot tall. We`re going to make it really special.
While they`re busy building Lego creations, these boys are also building some important skills, like creative thinking and teamwork.
"We`re trying to encourage some group work, some concurrent Lego building so they can develop some social skills, how to work together," said Lego Camp coach Pat Phillips.
They`re also learning about engineering. How to design and troubleshoot when the perfect piece isn`t available.
"That`s another engineering skill, make an exception and find something that will work, find an alternative solution to a problem," said Phillips.
Skills that will help them build a successful future. One Lego piece at a time.
This is the first of three Lego Camps offered at Gateway to Science this summer. The camps are so popular they`re already all filled and some even have waiting lists.
