A Healthy Heart for Hunting
11/6/2009
Among those thousands of hunters who go out are men and women who aren`t physically active much of the year.

And with all the walking, anticipation, and the adrenaline rushes, some could very easily suffer a heart attack.

Experts say hunters should be aware of their limitations and don`t overexert themselves.

Let family or friends know where you`re hunting and when you plan to return.

Don`t go hunting alone.

You never know when you`ll need a friend to find medical help.

And bring a cell phone with you so you can call in an emergency.

"People who don`t know they have heart disease, it`s just like having a stress test," says Dr. Karthik Reddy. "They`re exerting themselves more than normal. They they get these symptoms of chest pain or shortness or breath. If they do, they need to stop, get rest if their symptoms resolve, get medical help. Go to their doctors and have further testing."

And if you`re on medications for heart problems or other ailments, bring them with you. You never know when you`ll need them.
