November City Salute | Video
Marie Arceo
11/5/2009
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and even a single donation can help save the lives of several people. Here in North Dakota, there`s one blood bank that`s helping people all across the state. That`s why City Magazine and KFYR-TV give the non-profit corporation our City Salute for November.

Schools and businesses across the country aren`t the only ones affects by the H1N1 and seasonal flu. United Blood Services in Bismarck also says donations aren`t meeting the demand for blood.

"We`ve had a lot of cancellations in our in-center blood drive. Blood donations have been a lot lower but also our blood drives in the communities, at businesses, people are just being affected by the flu everywhere," said Stephanie Radenz, the Donor Recruitment Manager.

And the people who need it can`t get it. UBS says the O-Negative blood type, which is universal and used in emergency situations, is in critical state. That`s just one reason why it needs help, especially during the holidays, a time when UBS also says is most challenging.

"Everybody gets busy with Thanksgiving and that`s always a struggle for us, but the flu is really making a big impact on us this year," said Radenz.

Donors just need to be at least 16 years old, 110 pounds, and in good health. At UBS, donors will undergo a mini-physical before the actual process, which takes about 45 minutes..

"There`s patients in the hospital that are having surgeries that are dying and need to receive blood transfusions. They need platelets, anybody fighting cancer has probably received some sort of platelet donation or transfusion and it helps them survive," she said.

It`s a small contribution that makes a life-changing difference. UBS has locations in Bismarck, Minot, Aberdeen, and Fargo. The Bismarck office provides blood and blood components to patients in more than 500 hospitals in 18 states.
