Sobriety Checkpoints Look for Violators
Samantha Mehrotra
11/2/2009
The North Dakota Highway Patrol`s sobriety checkpoint this past weekend was a success. Officers stopped 121 cars and evaluated five drivers, but no one was arrested for driving under the influence.

And that`s good news, because recent numbers show traffic fatalities in this region are on the rise.

"Here in the northwest quadrant, unfortunately, our fatality rate is a lot higher than the other three regions," says Capt. Alan Billehus, of the Highway Patrol. "We are currently at about 42 fatalities for the year which is about 36-percent statewide. And that`s just too high."

As the holiday season approaches, Billehus says drivers can expect to see more patrol cars on the highway; Officers will be working extra hours to make sure people stay safe on the road.
