It`s called the "Body Jet". New technology that claims liposuction patients will enjoy better results with a faster recovery. It uses a high-powered stream of water to blast fat cells before suctioning them out.
Patient Monika Gilbert is hoping the "Body Jet" will help her situation. "There`s a like a pouch of fat we all have that even though you work out as much as you can, you can`t get rid of it", Gilbert said.
That stubborn area of fat drove Gilbert to get a traditional liposuction treatment on her waist three years ago. But she didn`t get the results she was hoping for. And she was left with scarring and a long and painful recovery.
"Before I could do anything normal it was at least 3-4 months", Gilbert said.
Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Scott Miller uses the new "Body Jet" system. "The difference to our patients is so dramatic that it just can`t be ignored", Dr. Miller said.
The new liposuction device features a high-pressure stream of water that shoots out of the tip of the suction wand, breaking up fat cells and scar tissue with ease.
Dr. Miller inserts the wand into a small incision in Gilbert`s belly button and controls the intensity of the water jet. He says this method dramatically reduces the need for that heavy-handed jabbing motion.
"You`re suctioning and infusing the solution at the same time and so you`re moving with a gentle violin-like motion instead of as if you were operating a jack hammer", Dr. Miller said.
That translates to less trauma for the patient and a quicker recovery. "Full recovery is two weeks versus six weeks. Activity of daily living is 2-3 days versus two weeks", Dr. Miller said.
He`s used the new technology on about 45 patients so far. Before and after results look similar to traditional liposuction but Dr. Miller says they`re getting smoother over-all results.
"The skin looks normal and healthy and vibrant", Dr. Miller said. "It doesn`t look sort of beat-up and go through a long recovery phase."
Dr. Miller says with the "Body Jet" can extract larger quantities of fat more precisely and can easily move the tool through scar tissue, opening the door to new patients who wouldn`t have been candidates for traditional treatment.
But there are still some skeptics in the industry. Plastic surgeon Dr. Barry Handler said, "What remains to be seen again, is when we start exploring our boundaries with this device, is it really any better than what we already have?"
Dr. Handler hasn`t used the body jet, and has heard mixed reviews from his colleagues, but he`s willing to give it a try. His advice to patients, do your homework before trying something new.
"If you`re trying new technology, you really ought to look for a board certified plastic surgeon," Dr. Handler said.
Dr. Miller says the cost of liposuction with the "Body Jet" is comparable to traditional lipo at an average of 5-thousand dollars.
