Teen Rescues Driver | Video
10/26/2009
A 19-year-old Salem, Oregon man is being credited with saving a woman’s life. “I had to make sure nobody was in the car, that`s horrible, I wouldn`t want to be left there burning,” said Nick Edwards.

Nickolas Edwards, 19, of Salem suffered cut hands when he dragged Destiny Edwards, 21, of Mill City, from her car on Oregon 22 and Joseph Street, according to Marion County sherrif’s office.

The two are not related.

Edwards was driving along Highway 22 in Marion County early Saturday morning when he spotted something unusual.

“The hood was on fire, the right side of the car was on fire, by the hood,” added Edwards. A 2005 Honda Civic was burning in a ditch at Joseph Street SE and its driver, Destiny Edwards, was trapped inside. “Got up closer and she noticed me and just starts screaming,” said Edwards.

With the blaze intensifying Edwards had to move quickly. He first tried opening the passenger door.

“It was heavy and didn`t budge at all so I started elbowing it, the door and window, didn`t do nothing,” Edwards added.

Next he started kicking the windshield. Unfortunately it was shatter proof, but he did not give up.

I kicked a hole with my toe and I said, I`m not going to be able to get her so I ripped it with my bare hands,” he said.

Edwards pulled the frantic woman from the car, then dragged her across the highway.

“It (the fire) started kicking as soon as we got across and started talking. It went up in flames, boom, boom, boom,” he added.

Considering what is left of the car, and the raging fire, authorities say Edwards is a hero.

“This kid saved her life, he was in the right place at the right time, without him being there she could`ve died in that fire,” said Lieutenant Sheila Lorance.

As for Edwards, he says he never would have been able to live with himself if he did not help out.

“I never want to be in that situation ever again, it was terrifying, terrifying, I`m still nerve racked about it,” added Edwards.

The driver of the car, Destiny Edwards, suffered lacerations to her head and face.

She was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital, treated then released.

Investigators interviewed her at the scene of the wreck and again at the hospital where she was handed a citation charging her with drunk driving.
