An Alaska bush pilot is recovering after a harrowing journey of survival.
Daniel McGregor walked through the Denali National Park for two days after his small plane crashed in the remote wilderness last Wednesday.
His passenger, noted wolf biologist Gordon Haber, was killed in the crash.
McGregor suffered serious burns to his face and hands, but was alert and in good spirits when he finally made contact with two campers.
He traveled nearly 16 miles on foot before finding them.
The three then walked another four miles back to their car, then drove nearly an hour to McGregor`s home.
From there he called family members and the Alaska State troopers.
McGregor was flown early Friday to Seattle`s Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his burns.
His rescuers, two campers from New Hampshire, said McGregor is the toughest guy they`ve ever met.
"We had no knowledge of any plane crash, we had no idea what was going on. My first thought was maybe he got attacked by an animal or something, by the way he looked," said Nick Rodrick.
They said family members were stunned and thankful to hear McGregor had survived.
"Completely amazed and ecstatic that we brought him to them. They were hugging us and as happy as all, and one guy lifted him off the ground," said Jesse Hoagland.
The two campers were on a coast-to-coast trip.
They say they plan to visit McGregor at Harborview on their way back to New Hampshire. |
