Bridge Jumping Bishop | Video
10/22/2009
He has a big job on his hands as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia, but Bridge Day at the famed New River Gorge Bridge has the power to bring out his wild side.

For the fifth time Bishop Mike Klusmeyer slid down a zip line from the New River Gorge Bridge to a scenic overlook about 800 feet away.

"It`s a moment of faith again to step off that bridge and trust the people around you," said Klusmeyer. " It`s kind of scary to let go. In the element of faith we are always called to let go of something."

While he does get an adrenaline rush, his reason for taking the plunge is to battle illiteracy.

It`s a mission the Episcopal Church started 60 years ago.

"If kids don`t have a book in their hand they don`t have an opportunity to read. Each year we give out over a thousand books. This year we`re hoping to give out over 2,000."

Members of the Episcopal Diocese were hard at work handing out books as visitors to the event passed by Saturday.

It`s this mission and a meeting between friends that started the Bishop`s Bridge Day adventure.

"We said if we could raise enough money I would jump off the bridge," said Klusmeyer. "I think I lot of people thought I was joking."

Since you have to be an experienced jumper, the Bishop had to settle for the zip line.
