Fat Cats and Chubby Pups | Video
10/21/2009
Chico, a four year old beagle was once tipping the scales at more than 50 pounds.

Chico isn`t alone with her weight woes.

"50 percent of the animals we see everyday are overweight," says Dr. Linda Jennings of Brambleton Veterinary Clinic.

She says obesity is a sure way to lead to pressure on joints and provide a predisposition to orthopedic disease and diabetes.

"It`s a manifestation of the fact that people are getting overweight and whatever Hardees they get they give one to dog. They feel that`s an ok thing because it`s a way they feel they are taking care of them."

Dr. Jennings says dry food could be to blame for overweight cats because they`re carnivores and need more fat and protein.

"Try to feed as much canned food to cats as you can and they will lose weight."

Exercise will also help and if you have time and a little money doggy day care is a good option.

"When you pick them up they`re exhausted and they`re well taken care of and have had some exercise. It`s a way to start getting them used to moderate activity."
