NDEA Switches Gears | Video

Campaigning is all about convincing people to vote for certain candidates, but every voter has a list of his or her own priorities when casting a ballot.

So it`s not unusual for certain organizations to endorse candidates that best meet their criteria.

The NDEA just released recommendations for candidates running for Governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction, treasurer, and Insurance Commissioner. And one choice in particular may surprise you a little.

The North Dakota Education Association says choosing the best candidates isn`t easy.

"We have a process where our members interview all of these candidates what`s really important to remember here, I think North Dakota is really blessed because we have strong candidates in every one of these races and none of these decisions were really easy," says Greg Burns, of NDEA. "A lot of discussion."

The NDEA is continuing to endorse Governor John Hoeven and Incumbent Kelly Schmidt for State Treasurer. It`s recommending Jasper Schneider for Insurance Commissioner and Former NDEA President Max Laird for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

That may surprise some people considering Wayne Sanstead didn`t get the nod after holding the position for 23 years.

"Dr. Sanstead is a legend and that`s why these decisions are tough to make," Burns says. "But our members felt Max brings a vision and energy that`s needed in that department right now."

One principal says he`s pleased with the NDEA`s recommendations and hopes the candidates will meet our students` needs.

"Unfortunately we export kids," says Lynn Wolf, Dorothy Moses Elementary principal. "That`s one of our exports in this state and we`d like to be able to hang on to them and have them do things here in our state, but we need to find ways to fund appropriate educational needs of these children."

And the NDEA says people should feel confident putting their children`s future in these candidates` hands.

The NDEA says it`s excited about many of the ideas the candidates have, including Max Laird`s plans to work around The No Child Left Behind Act.
